  9. This program is distributed under the Shareware concept. The Shareware system lets you
  10. trial a piece of software before deciding whether or not to pay for it. It results in
  11. lower priced software for all users, as the costs of distribution are far less than
  12. traditional commercial channels. It also results in higher quality software, as users
  13. are able to evaluate software before buying.

  29. Welcome to Desktop Themes!

  32. The "Desktop Theme" concept was introduced by Microsoft with their Plus! pack for
  33. Windows 95. A Theme is a collection of wallpaper, pointers, sounds, colours, fonts and
  34. screensavers, all bundled together into a convenient package. It enables you to
  35. completely alter the appearance of your desktop in one step, without having to tediously
  36. alter all the settings manually. The term "theme" is used because the items of a theme
  37. are usually all related in some way (eg, a particular band, a type of car, etc).

  39. There are literally thousands of Themes available on the net, and most of them can be
  40. downloaded for free. Some good places to start looking for Themes are Tucows FreeThemes
  41. (www.freethemes.com) and Winfiles.com (www.winfiles.com). There are many other Theme
  42. sites; a list of some of them can be found in the Desktop Themes program itself.

  44. The problem with the Microsoft Theme solution was that the user was required to buy the
  45. expensive Plus! pack in order to be able to use Themes. The Microsoft solution was
  46. also very unfriendly to use, and did not enable you to easily modify a Theme or create
  47. your own. We at Left Side Software created the "Desktop Themes" application to address
  48. the need for a reasonably priced, user-friendly and, above all, powerful Theme solution.

  52. Installing the Desktop Themes software

  55. The Desktop Themes program is distributed as a ZIP file; if you are reading these
  56. instructions it is likely that you have already unzipped the file. If not, you will
  57. need a Zip program like WinZip (http://www.winzip.com) to extract the Desktop Themes
  58. files.

  60. The Desktop Themes program is very easy to install, as it consists of just a single
  61. executable (.exe) file. The easiest way to install it is to use the supplied Setup
  62. program. Simply double-click on Setup.exe and follow the instructions provided.

  64. If you are confident using Windows Explorer, you can easily copy the
  65. "Desktop Themes.exe" program to your Program Files directory, and create a shortcut
  66. in your Startup menu.

  68. If you used the Setup program, it will automatically open this readme file for you.
  69. Please read it carefully before using the software, as the answers to most questions
  70. can be found in here.

  72. When you are ready to run the Desktop Themes program, simply select it from the
  73. Start menu, or double-click on its icon. If this is the first time you have run a
  74. Themes program, it will ask you to select a location to store Theme files. This is
  75. explained in more detail later; for the moment, just accept the default location by
  76. clicking OK. You will then be ready to start using Themes!

  80. Quick Guide to Using Themes

  83. The Desktop Themes program will be discussed in detail later on; if you are a new
  84. user, or just want to get running quickly, you should read this section first.

  86. Most Theme files are distributed in ZIP format, and so you will need a Zip program
  87. like WinZip (http://www.winzip.com) to access them. If you are not using WinZip,
  88. make sure the Zip program you do use supports long filenames (this is crucial).

  90. Using Themes with the Left Side Software Desktop Themes program is a four step
  91. process.

  93.   1. Download
  94.  
  95.      The first step is to Download the Theme you want to use. As we said before,
  96.      there are thousands of themes available, and hundreds of theme sites on the
  97.      net. If you are a beginner, we suggest you start with http://www.freethemes.com
  98.      as this service has one of the largest themes collections available. We can't
  99.      give you detailed instructions on how to actually download the Theme here, as
  100.      it will depend on which web browser you are using, but generally all you
  101.      need to do is to click on the link to the Theme Zip file, and the download
  102.      should start automatically. If you are asked where to save the Theme file you
  103.      are downloading, we suggest you store it in a temporary folder. To create a
  104.      temporary folder easily (if you don't already have one), simply right-click
  105.      on the Windows desktop and select New -> Folder.

  108.   2. Extract
  109.  
  110.      If the Theme you just downloaded is in Zip format (most of them are), you will
  111.      need to extract the contents of the Zip file before you can access it. We suggest
  112.      you use WinZip (www.winzip.com) for this purpose; if you use another Zip program,
  113.      make sure it supports long filenames. Please follow the instructions for your
  114.      particular Zip program to extract the Theme file; again, we suggest you extract
  115.      it to a temporary folder. Neither the zipped file or the extracted contents of the
  116.      Theme are required to be saved permanently by you.

  119.   3. Install

  121.      The third step is to Install the Theme that you have just downloaded. In the
  122.      context of Desktop Themes, to "Install" a theme means to copy the various
  123.      components of the Theme to your Theme Storage directory. Installing a theme
  124.      does NOT actually cause your desktop settings to be changed; all it does is
  125.      make a permanent copy of the theme files so that you can then go on to use
  126.      the theme. The Theme Storage directory defaults to "C:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes"
  127.      for historical reasons; unless you have a good reason, you probably shouldn't
  128.      change this.

  130.      To Install the Theme, you need to run the Desktop Themes program. When the
  131.      Desktop Themes interface appears, click on the "Install" tab at the top of the
  132.      window. Then, click on the Browse button to bring up the Open File dialog.
  133.      Navigate to the temporary folder that you extracted the Theme into, and select
  134.      the Theme file to install. When you have found the Theme, click the OK button
  135.      to close the dialog, and then click the Install button to install the Theme.

  137.      Once you have installed the Theme, you are free to delete the Zip file and the
  138.      files that you extracted from it. These are no longer required by Desktop Themes.

  141.   4. Apply

  143.      Once you have installed a Theme, you can then Apply it at your leisure. We use
  144.      the term "Apply" to mean actually changing your desktop configuration to use the
  145.      new Theme. A Theme MUST have been installed before it can be applied.

  147.      Again, you need to be running the Desktop Themes program. Click on the "Theme" tab
  148.      at the top of the window if you are not already on this page. Next to the words
  149.      "Current Theme" is a drop-down list, which contains a list of all the Themes you
  150.      have installed on your system. Click on the drop-down list, and then select the
  151.      Theme that you want to use. When you click on a Theme, the drop-down list should
  152.      disappear, and the Theme preview below should change to reflect the new T
